Peggy Darling
I was born the 5th and last child
of Joe and Maureen Prevesk in the wind-swept foothills of
the Alleghany Mountains in Olean New York on a cold and
frosty morning in November. I was named Margaret Mary Prevesk
- call me Peggy please - named after my mom's mom who died
in the same hospital after holding me on Nov. 2nd of the
same year. I'm told Grandma ways dreamed of coming to Alaska.
My family had moved a few times before we settled in Frewsburg
New York while I was in the second grade. I would kiss my
Darling husband-to-be in my 12th summer of life, he in his
15th. With that kiss came the knowledge and pledge of marriage
and a life together. And so the journey began.
I graduated Frewsburg Central High School in 1985 and set
off for college the following year. I entered S.U.N.Y. @Morrisville,
(State Unirversity New York) and graduated with an associates
degree in SaddleHorse Mangament and Production in 1989.
The same summer my husband to be, sent me a plane ticket
to visit him in NYAC Alaska, between Bethel and Anaiak,
where he ended up after serving in the United States Marine
Corps. After two weeks of playing Annie Oakley with the
guns and bears I was hooked! Alaska was beautiful in August!!
What a great introduction to the North, it was very seductive
with it's warm sun, long hours of daylight, flowers, animals,
gold, and a few people. Yes it was charming indeed, little
did I know of the secrets the land held behind it's curtain
of sun and warmth.
In October of the same said year my husband-to-be returned
to New York and offered me to escape to the great land of
Alaska with him and live in the bush, NYAC for the winter,
just he and I in our own little world, with no other people
around, no stores, no streets, and no phone. With the dream
of living the life of Annie Oakley rolling around in my
head and all the seductions of summer in Alaska I agreed!!
EGADS! Alaska had turned into a cold lover upon my return!
No more were the long lighted days, warm sun, flowers, few
people, or see-able animals, oh no, Alaska had a different
stage set for me. It was awe inspiring, spin tingling, ridden
with fear and danger, but still seductive in a dangerous
sort of way. The land was stark white, wind blown and cold.
It was quiet enough to unnerve even a recluse like me! The
winter was filled with trapping animals for fur, and chopping
wood….and chopping wood……and chopping
more wood! We had no heat except for the three life saving
wood stoves, no running water in our home, and cooking was
done in an old time kitchen wood stove by a young girl who
didn't know how to cook anything but a grilled cheese sandwich!
We survived and left the bush a year later closer than ever!
We returned to New York in December of 1989, and married
two weeks later on Dec. 16th. and I became Mrs. Jeff Darling….
We returned to Nyac for two more summers of gold mining
and one more winter of trapping then moved on to Flat Alaska
and some mining claims we had secured. Unfortunately one
peice of bad luck followed another and we left that to work
at Hogatza; on the Hog River just a speck below the Artic
Circle. I continued my job from the previouse mines as "Bull
Cook and Chief Bottle Washer", Jeff as a foreman.
After the mining season we returned to Frewsburg New York
where we had built a home on 36 acres.
A call from Alaska Gold
offered us work for one summer in Nome. That was 15 summers
ago! We long ago sold the home in New York and have found
our niche here in this great town. I worked several jobs,
but my favorite was working at the Nome Community Center
assisting families in need of support. A great place to
work and a great asset for the community. Currently and
permanently I work with my husband at our business, Quality
Auto Parts in Nome Alaska.
We have a Dog Kennel, Quality
Auto Pups, with 31 dogs that my husband actively mushes,
kept at our home. I love caring for the dogs but truth
be told, I'm a fair weather musher!!
He will be joining the All-Alaska
Sweepstakes Race this 100th commemorative year 2008, here
in Nome. He is racing for the historical value and a chance
to see some countryside he might not otherwise be able
to see by dog team. I'm joiniing the Sweepstakes Queen
contest to help in providing prize money to the teams
that finish the race, albiet not first.
This Alaska Adventure has been quite a ride and I hope
it continues till the end.
MUSH!!!!! MUSH!!!!!
