Where did you grow up and how long did you live there?
I was raised in Massachussetts and manage to survive there until
2003.
When and why did you move to the place you are now?
In 2004, when I was living in Quebec, Canada, I came to Alaska on
vacation looking to buy dogs and I visited several of the more competitive
kennels in the state. When I drove through Broad Pass and the Alaska
Range, I knew I had found my place. I went home and within a month
my wife and I were packing up a U-Haul rental truck and drove up
to Alaska. I also wanted to spend more time on my sled and less
time in my dog truck.
If you live in Alaska:
How long have you lived
here?
3 years
If you were not born in Alaska, when did you come here
to live and why?
Dog mushing of course, isn't that a free pass?
What is your current occupation
and how long have you worked in this occupation?
I install glass windows in canvas wall tents at 26 below zero,
as well as other things.
What organization(s) do you belong to?
None
What are your hobbies and interest, other than dog mushing?
I must be a boring guy, no organizations and no other non-mushing
related interests. I do enjoy sled building.
Mushing Background:
When did you begin mushing?
1990
Describe your mushing experience:
I really do not have much racing experience
considering the number of years I've been involved with sled dogs.
The highlights of my racing career were the 1997 Can-Am Crown
250 and last year's Kobuk 440. The Can Am was were I learned that
I was a long distance musher and the Kobuk 440 special to me for
many reasons, was an affirmation that I could still do this sort
of thing.
General Information:
Write a little about yourself, your background,
your dogs and why you have signed up for the 2008 All Alaska Sweepstakes:
There are really two components to my dog mushing
that are relevent. First, Iv'e been around dogs my whole life.
My grandfather and my godfather raised Beagles, and I always loved
being around dogs. Second, as a child the only thing my parents
could get me to read were the accounts of all the great polar
explorers being stranded on the ice watching their ships get crushed
and making some heroic dash for land with sled dogs.
I always thought that those days
were long gone, and then Will Steger re-enacted Robert Perry's
historic trek to the North Pole, and National Geographic Chronicled
it on their weekly program, Explorer. That was it, I was going
to be a polar explorer, then I heard about the Iditarod and my
lifehas never been the same. My parents would'nt let me collect
sled dogs at home. Shortly after graduating from highschool I
moved out and within a week I had my first sled dog.
My dogs are out of some of the best
producing long distance breeding around. I tell them everyday
that they are the hottest young dog team in the state and what's
really cool is that they believe me.
The reason I am entering the All
Alaska Sweepstakes is because I needed to get some sleep. About
two years ago The Sweepstakes came up in a conversation and I
just can't get it out of my head. I lie awake at night thinking
about the event. All the pros & cons. The hows and whys. That
sort of thing. Bottom line. It's the one hundreth anniversary
of the All Alaska Sweepstakes. If you've got a dog team you've
just gotta be there!

For
more than 75 years, Alaska Airlines and
its people have been guided through thick
and thin by a shared commitment to integrity,
caring, resourcefulness, professionalism
and spirit. Especially spirit - an Alaskan
spirit, born in the land the airline is
named after - a place where "can-do"
and "neighbor-helping-neighbor"
are facts of life.
