Dana Sherman
Twenty five years ago as Rick Swenson mushed his way into
Candle; the Sherman family delighted in his welcome as well
as the other musher’s going through.
My father, Jake Sherman and his siblings were born and raised
in Candle and he along with his mother, my Ahna Lizzie journeyed
back home for the exciting race with me in tow.
I was only 11 months old at the time, but still enjoy the
stories of having been there for it; my first race.
Growing up in Unalakleet before moving to Nome, I remember
helping my uncle Clarence “Junie” Towarak and
aunt Ferno Tweto’s dogs during the winter; feeding
them and keeping them fit with runs.
Well maybe I didn’t always help feed the dogs as much
as I did playing with them, but it was definitely a part
of growing up. Just ask me for a great story!
My parents had also housed mushers through out the years
during the Iditarod, which was always such a big deal for
me (collecting little dog booties wherever I could)! There
is so much that goes into racing- the trail, the competition,
the weather and of course the team: a hard working musher
and his/her dogs.
Now that the centennial celebration of the race draws near,
I’m thrilled to be able to share the same experience
with my son Andy. I want this to be a part of his childhood
as it was mine.
I am proud to be a Nomeite and love all that Alaska has
to offer. I enjoy being outdoors whether it is participating
in the Polar Bear Swim, berry picking, collecting glass
rock on our shores, camping at Nuuk, or indulging in the
tub at Pilgrim Hot Springs.
My name is Dana Sherman and I was born April 22, 1982 to
Jake and Glenda Sherman. My heritage travels from Unalakleet
to Candle and many villages in between!
I currently work at NSHC, have a degree in Massage Therapy,
and am in my second year of coaching the NBHS Varsity Cheerleaders.
Thank you for your support and I look forward to the year’s
event!
